MySQL PHP Insert and Update
As mentioned in the
Querying with PHP Tutorial , any query that can be used with the
MySQL command prompt can be passed as a string variable to the
PHP library function
mysql_query() .
Therefore inserting or updating a table uses the same syntax as that covered in the
Insert, Update and Delete Tutorial .
As long as the PHP rules on single and double quoted strings are observed, the code is straightforward.
Example of a Table Insert
<?php
$query = "INSERT INTO persons SET
firstname = 'Dave',
lastname = 'Clark',
address = 'Main Street',
county = 'West Lothian',
country = 'UK',
age = 40;";
$result = mysql_query($query, $connection) or exit(mysql_error());
?>
Example of a Table Update
<?php
$query = "UPDATE persons SET country = 'US', address = 'Oak Drive', county = 'Nevada' WHERE id = 1;";
$result = mysql_query($query, $connection) or exit(mysql_error());
?>
Example of Deleting a Row from a Table
<?php
$query = "DELETE FROM persons WHERE id = 1;";
$result = mysql_query($query, $connection) or exit(mysql_error());
?>
